Keeping the faith and keeping kids safe: new guide released

21 August 2020

The Office of the Children’s Guardian has released a guide for faith-based organisations to help them implement the NSW Child Safe Standards.

The guide gives practical tips and provides examples which showcase how different organisations are already implementing the standards and how they have established systems to prevent, detect and respond to child abuse.

The NSW Child Standards were developed in response to recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

While the royal commission focused on sexual abuse, the new guide aims to prevent all kinds of abuse children may be subjected to.

The guide also supports the creation of child safe communities of practice so that learning from within different faiths and organisations can be shared, pooling resources and driving a shared vision of continuous improvement.

“Straightforward and easy for any faith organisation to consider their current practice against each standard, then have clear ideas on how to implement a standard or improve their current practice.” Allyson Parker ACC Safer Churches Director
